Seach for missing Indigenous man in Yellowknife ends in tragedy

The search for a missing Indigenous man has ended in tragedy. Yellowknife police reported this afternoon that Johnny Jr. Ningeongan, who was just 28 years old, was found deceased yesterday. Officers reported that Ningeongan’s death is under investigation.

Ningeongan is originally from Nunavut and was last seen near the Chateau Nova hotel in Yellowknife.

According to the report issued by officers on Monday, Ningeongan was last seen on Saturday and has not been in contact with friends and family since.

Earlier this week, his family and friends, concerned for his wellbeing had issued a public appeal in conjunction with the RCMP for information about his whereabouts.

Police said the Coroner’s Service is taking the investigative lead at this time and plan to conduct an autopsy.

“The matter is being investigated by the Northwest Territories Coroner’s Service with assistance from the RCMP.”

Ningeongan was found in Yellowknife. Officers said they could not provide more information because the investigation remains ongoing.
