Aurora College has announced that they have been given eligibility to pursue funding through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
This will allow staff, research associates, and students at the college to access a wider range of grants for health-related research.
“CIHR funding will also provide expanded hands-on research opportunities for students, helping to foster the next generation of Northern health professionals and scholars,” said Aurora College Interim President, Dr. Nora Houlahan.
The CIHR is the federal agency responsible for the funding of healthcare research in Canada, one of the three main federal research granting agencies alongside the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, which the college already maintained eligibility for.
Access to this stream of funding will allow Aurora College to lead projects dedicated to health outcomes in the North, including initiatives to support Indigenous traditional healing practices.
“Research led by Aurora College can be tailored to the specific geographical and cultural context of the Northwest Territories, ensuring that health solutions are developed in the North, for the North,” said Dr. Houlahan.
The college will now be better positioned to collaborate with health authorities, community organizations, and other post-secondary institutions on health initiatives to benefit northerners.
