The Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly voted on the recommendations put forward by the Electoral Boundaries Commission earlier this week.
One of the topics that was voted on and accepted was the recommendation to no longer use “Great Slave” as a name for an electoral district.
The Legislative Assembly’s Board of Management is working to bring forward legislation to rename the district currently holding that name to Yellowknife East.
Another recommendation that was voted on was the proposal to switch to 22 electoral districts for the territory, rather than the current number of 19. This recommendation was rejected by the assembly.
The Electoral Boundaries Commission is an independent body created by the Legislative Assembly to review the existing electoral districts after every second general election in the NWT.
The commission then provides their recommendations to the assembly, which are voted on.
The report that was voted on was released in February of this year and can be found here.
