YKFD responds to reports of smoke at Watermark Tower

The City of Yellowknife Fire Division (YKFD) responded to reports of smoke coming from the roof of the Watermark Tower, located at 4503 52 Avenue, just before 1 pm on the 21st of January.

A total of eight firefighters were deployed to the scene. Upon arrival, they noticed dark smoke coming from the building’s roof.

The smoke was caused by a malfunctioning heating boiler in the building, and not by a fire. The fire alarm in the main lobby had been pulled in the confusion. The boiler was turned off, with maintenance and repair to be carried out by the building staff.

The YKFD reminds the community that heating devices should be regularly inspected and maintained to ensure safe function, and that all heating devices must maintain a safe working clearance to prevent overheating of nearby materials.
