A progress update on the Downtown Safety Initiative highlights suggestions for both long-term and short-term ways the area can be supported.
The initiative is a partnership between The City of Yellowknife and Yellowknife Chamber of Commerce, and the recent update follows up on the What We Heard Report released by The City last September. According to officials, the report includes input and suggestions collected from downtown business owners, community partners, and city representatives to help Yellowknife’s downtown area in its role as an economic and social hub.
Improving communication among businesses, organizing community events, and attracting more foot traffic were all proposed as potential ways to help revitalize the area.
The update goes into what efforts the city has made in the realization of these ideas.
According to officials the city has worked to support many events in the downtown area including Remembrance Day, Canada day and Santa Claus Parades; they also have supported Farmers Markets in the area.
It is also noted that the city is working to streamline the logistical process for event organizers.
The Yellowknife Chamber of Commerce has explored the possibility of establishing a Business Improvement District in The City, creating a framework for local businesses to work together to fund improvements in the area.
The City and the Chamber are both committed to supporting these initiatives and continuing to collaborate with local businesses to make Yellowknife’s downtown the best it can be.
