After investigation by the Calgary Police Services concluded yesterday, an NWT RCMP officer is facing sexual assault charges in relation to an alleged incident that took place in the city of Yellowknife.
“Earlier this year, the Northwest Territories RCMP were made aware of allegations that an officer had committed a sexual assault while off duty, in the area of Yellowknife,” said police in an announcement issued this afternoon.
“Given that there is no independent oversight agency in the Northwest Territories, the matter was immediately transferred to an outside agency, the Calgary Police Service, who began their investigation in March of 2025. The officer was suspended with pay,” said RCMP.

- Sexual assault, contrary to section 271 of the Criminal Code
Officials reported that the officer was issued a Summons and he will appear in court in Yellowknife in January.
“The officer remains suspended at this time,” said police.
Chief Superintendent Dyson Smith, commanding officer of Northwest Territories RCMP, said the that following the allegations, the force took “immediate steps” in accordance with their duties of public safety.
“We take these allegations and our commitment to transparency very seriously. As such, we took immediate steps to ensure our accountability to the public and to preserve the integrity of this investigation. Public trust is essential for the NT RCMP to effectively fulfill its mandate. NT RCMP employees are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that meets the rightfully high expectations of residents of the Northwest Territories.”
