Eight new modular homes arrive in Behchokǫ̀

Eight new modular housing units, in the form of four duplexes, have arrived in Behchokǫ̀, providing new single-occupant social housing for the community.

The units were constructed in Hay River by METCAN Building Solutions Inc before being sent to Behchokǫ̀ via highway. The units are expected to be ready for occupants by December.

These units are the first of a planned 10-unit delivery for the community, the last two of which, combined in a fifth duplex, expected to arrive in the community in late 2026.

These 10 new homes are part of Housing NWT’s goal of delivery 98 new single-occupant units to nine communities around the NWT by spring of 2028.

The communities for this project were selected based on a demonstrated need for additional single-occupant units. In Behchokǫ, the majority of households on the social housing list are seeking one-bedroom units.

“Each new home brings us one step closer to meeting the housing needs residents have identified in their communities,” said Minister Lucy Kuptana.

This project is part of a $150 million investment by the GNWT to increase access to affordable housing in the territory.
