GWNT accepts Auditor General’s report on early learning and childcare in the NWT

The Government of the Northwest Territories has announced that they have accepted the findings of the Office of the Auditor General of Canada’s Performance Audit of Early Learning and Child Care in the NWT.

The audit focused on affordability, accessibility, quality, and inclusion in early learning and child care, as well as inspections of licensed facilities, to identify gaps and issues with the NWT’s programs.

“This report spotlights areas where the government can do better, and we accept both the report’s findings and all its recommendations,” said Minister Caitlin Cleveland.

The GNWT will be working to address all the recommendations by assessing community needs, implementing an enhanced funding verification process, expanding training for child care facility inspectors, and improving transparency among many other efforts.

“We are committed to seeing this work through for children and families across the Northwest Territories,” said Cleveland.

The GWNT is working to put together a response to the Auditor General’s report detailing their actions to implement the audit’s suggestions that will be publicly released by December 2026.

The Office of the Auditor General’s findings can be found here.
