Premier R.J. Simpson speaks on priorities ahead of Premier’s and First Ministers meeting

Northwest Territories Premier R.J. Simpson has released a statement on Northern priorities ahead of this week’s meeting of Canada’s Premiers and First Ministers in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

“This week’s meetings are an important opportunity to find common ground with provincial and territorial colleagues and to continue working with the federal government on practical solutions that improve the lives of Canadians,” said Simpson.

The Premier says that one of his priorities will be advancing investments in arctic security and sovereignty in a way that strengthens communities in the NWT and provides opportunities for Northerners.

He praised the progress made over the last year, naming major projects and infrastructure investments that have gained national attention such as the Mackenzie Valley Highway and the Taltson Hydro Expansion.

“There is growing recognition that investing in the North is essential to Canada’s economic and security interests,” said Simpson.

However, he also cautioned that these investments and projects must benefit the people of the NWT, leaving communities stronger than when they began, if they are to be successful.

“The success of our major projects depends on accessible and affordable housing, healthy communities, a strong workforce and meaningful economic opportunities for Indigenous governments, Northern businesses and residents,” said the Premier.

The Premier said he will be advocating for federal support for essential programs in the territory, such as health care. He also said he would work to make sure Indigenous voices are heard as a part of these proceedings.

“I look forward to meeting with National Indigenous Organization leaders to help ensure Indigenous priorities and perspectives are part of these national conversations,” said Simpson.

Later this summer, the NWT will be taking the role of Chair of the Council of the Federation for the upcoming year.

“I look forward to working with Premiers from across the country to build on the areas where we agree, strengthen our relationship with the federal government and focus on delivering real results for Canadians,” said the Premier.
