GNWT issues closure caution for Nahanni Butte Winter Rd

The Northwest Territories department of Infrastructure has issued a 24-hour Closure Caution at km 12 of the Nahanni Butte Winter Road. According to the message posted today on social media and the Drive NWT website, the road could “close sooner with little to no notice.”

Last week the Wekweètì and Gamètì winter roads closed for the season, after they were restricted to night travel only between 10 pm to 10 am. A representative with GNWT’s department of Infrastructure said access to some winter roads and sections remain limited to timed travel to preserve their longevity at the end of the winter road season.

Earlier this month,  the Mackenzie Valley Winter Road, the Sambaa K’e Access Road and the Edzo-Rae Ice Road were closed for the winter season.

Planned closures of winter roads and ice roads are anticipated to continue this month. A number of ice roads and winter roads like the Dettah Ice Road are expected to close for the season.

Officials advised travellers to head to Drive NWT for the latest updates on road conditions, including seasonal road closures.
