The City of Yellowknife has announced that they will be working in partnership with Extraordinary Yellowknife to add new wayfinding signs across the city.
The first phase of this project will introduce new directional signs throughout the city and trail signage around Frame Lake, replacing outdated and damaged signed.
The signs, featuring Extraordinary Yellowknife branding, will use recognizable symbols to help people find their way around the city, regardless of their first language. Some of the signs will also include a beaded floral design, incorporating a distinctive local element.
“This project will help connect residents and visitors to our trails, local attractions and the stories that make Yellowknife so extraordinary,” said Donna Lee Demarcke, CEO at Northwest Territories Tourism, representing Extraordinary Yellowknife.
This initiative builds on the city’s 2019 Wayfinding Strategy and works to advance the city’s 2025-2028 Tourism Strategy, supporting the growth and expansion of Yellowknife’s tourism industry.
“We are pleased to see investment in the connections between our public spaces, local businesses, cultural experiences and natural attractions,” said Yellowknife Mayor Melissa Syer.
The rollout of this project will continue into 2027, with additional signs, maps along major routes, and updated signage at key visitor arrival points like the Yellowknife Airport and the Dettah Ice Road.
