Scientists with the territorial government say a rainstorm is expected over the South Nahanni River basin that could bring up to 50 millimetres of rainfall in some areas of the Mackenzie Mountains.
They anticipate the heavier rainfall for the South Nahanni River basin, where rainfall totals of 25 to 40 mm are expected by tonight, with localized amounts of up to 50 mm possible.
Scientists warned that with water levels on the South Nahanni River already higher than normal, heavy rainfall combined with accelerated melt of remaining snow could cause rapid rises in water levels and river flows.
For these reasons, Nahanni Butte could be at an increased risk of flooding if water levels elevate rapidly.
Scientists advised anyone travelling or working on the land near rivers in this region could be affected by changing water levels.
“Those planning to be out on the land should be aware that this rainfall may cause rapid rises in water levels and flow. Be prepared with communication methods before you go out on the land, know the conditions and be prepared to leave your cabin, camp, or cabin on short notice should flooding become imminent,” said Climate Change scientists with the GNWT in a water bulletin report issued June 15.
