GNWT closes Wekweètì and Gamètì winter roads for the season

The Northwest Territories department of Infrastructure has closed the Wekweètì and Gamètì winter roads for the season.

A closure caution was first issued on Sunday.

Earlier this month, the Wekweètì and Gamètì winter roads were restricted to night travel only between 10 pm to 10 am.

A representative with GNWT’s department of Infrastructure said access to some winter roads and sections remain limited to timed travel to preserve their longevity at the end of the winter road season.

This month a number of ice roads and winter roads are anticipated to close for the season including the Dettah Ice Road.

Officials advised travellers to head to Drive NWT for the latest updates on road conditions including seasonal road closures.

Earlier this month the territorial Infrastructure department closed the Mackenzie Valley Winter Road and the Sambaa K’e Access Road as part of planned seasonal closures. Earlier this month, the Edzo-Rae Ice Road saw a planned seasonal closure.

The Tłı̨chǫ Public Works department advised the public to avoid travel on this route during the closure as seasonal conditions change.
