Warm and dry weather over the next week is expected to cause increased activity in the Fort Simpson wildfire, with more smoke and active burning across the affected areas.
Crews are working along the eastern flank of the fire to extinguish any remaining hot spots, including deep ash pits and other underground sources of trapped heat.
Work is underway to establish a 100 ft blackline, meaning there is no fire within 100 ft of the wildfire perimeter in both forested areas and around structures,
Various regions along the eastern edge of the fire have had blacklines established, ranging in size from 100 ft to 25 ft.
As of last evening, four new naturally caused fires have been reported in the Dehcho Region.
Two are located north northeast of Fort Simpson, on the far side of the Mackenzie River. The other two are located east of McGern Island.
All are being monitored and are not currently considered a threat to cabins, communities, or infrastructure.
Aircraft patrols are expected for the Yellowknife area due to lightning.
