Minister Rebecca Alty was a part of the Canadian delegation at the 25th session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues which began this past Monday.
Alty spoke at the forum, speaking on the resilience of Indigenous Peoples in the face of climate change.
Alty also highlighted Canada’s recently launched A Force of Nature Strategy, a $3.8 billion dollar plan to implement Canada’s 2030 Nature Strategy. The plan emphasizes the importance of Indigenous‑led conservation in Canada’s efforts in combating climate change.
Minister Alty also had bilateral meeting with several other officials in attendance at the forum, which the Department of Crown-Indigenous Relations says were productive.
Canada also hosted an event, bringing together Indigenous leaders, experts, and governments to discuss the importance of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in protecting health.
The Department of Crown-Indigenous Relations said in a press release, “Canada will keep working, at home and with our partners around the world, to advance reconciliation as we continue to implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act and support Indigenous‑led solutions, guided by the leadership of First Nations, Inuit and Métis voices.”
