Northwest Territories Member of Parliament Rebecca Alty highlighted an investment of over $95,000 into three organizations in the NWT under the Local Food Infrastructure Fund.
These investments will help Indigenous organizations to work to strengthen local food systems by increasing harvesting capacity, expand community gardening infrastructure, and improve access to nutritious food in northern communities.
“Investing in community-led projects like these helps ensure that northern and Indigenous communities have the tools and resources they need to access healthy, local, and traditional foods,” said Minister Alty.
The Tetlit Gwich’in Council, the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation, and the Aklavik Community Corporation will each receive funding to help with the purchase of equipment and supplies to realize these projects.
This announcement follows the announcement earlier this month of over $30 million being invested in 235 large-scale and small-scale projects across Canada under the Local Food Infrastructure Fund.
“As we take action to stabilize food prices, invest in domestic production, and support Canadians, the Local Food Infrastructure Fund will help ensure more families can access healthy, local food in their communities from coast to coast to coast,” said Minister Heath MacDonald.
