GNWT closes Mackenzie Valley Winter Road for season

The territorial government’s Infrastructure department says the Mackenzie Valley Winter Road is closed for the season.

On April 3, the department closed the Mackenzie Valley Winter Road’s Wrigley – Délı̨nę Junction and today its remaining sections were closed after being placed on 24-hour closure notice on Wednesday.

On April 8, the Sambaa K’e Access Road was closed for the season.

As of about 12:30 pm Thursday, the Wekweètì and Gamètì winter roads remain restricted to night travel only between 10 pm to 10 am.

A representative with GNWT’s department of Infrastructure said access to winter roads and sections are limited to timed travel to preserve their longevity at the end of the winter road season.

This month a number of ice roads and winter roads are anticipated to close for the season including the Dettah Ice Road.

Officials advised travellers to head to Drive NWT for the latest updates on road conditions including seasonal road closures.

Sambaa K’e Access Road has been closed for the season as of April 8. On Tuesday, the department of Infrastructure issued a 24 Hour Notice of Closure Caution for the road from 803 m southwest of km 4 to 817 m southwest of km 112. Officials had advised that the road “may close sooner with little to no notice.
