Drivers advised of closures for Edzo-Rae Ice Road and Hwy 1

Highway 1 was closed to drivers as of Wednesday morning just after 10 a.m. and the Edzo-Rae Ice Road will see a planned seasonal closure this afternoon. The planned closure was announced earlier this week and is part of seasonal changes that will also see the Dettah Ice Road close later this month.

The Tłı̨chǫ Public Works department says the Edzo-Rae Ice Road Connector in Behchokǫ̀ will be closing on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m.

Tłı̨chǫ public works officials are advising the public to avoid travel on this route during the closure as seasonal conditions change.

On Wednesday morning, the GNWT’s department of Infrastructure closed Highway 1 from km 696 to 967 m northwest of km 916.

North Now has reached out to the department for more details and will provide that information when it becomes available.

Updates on the latest road conditions in the territory can be found on Drive N.W.T.

Update:  At about 3 p.m. GNWT’s department of Infrastructure issued an update that Highway 1 from 44 m south of km 698 to 125 m northwest of km 916 would be open for all vehicles to travel between the hours of 10 pm to 10 a.m. only.

Update: A representative from the GNWT’s Infrastructure department reported that Wrigley to Tulita (the Mackenzie Valley Winter Road) was temporarily closed due to a vehicle blocking traffic and the road reopened around 1 pm that afternoon but is restricted to night travel only (10 pm – 10 am).
