The Government of the Northwest Territories has announced that five new social housing units in Behchokǫ̀ are now ready for tenants.
The keys for the units, which consist of a four-unit building and a three-bedroom family home, have been given to the Local Housing Organization, who are working with tenants to allow them to begin moving in.
“These five units replace older social housing units and mean more residents will have access to safe, modern housing in their community,” said Minister Lucy Kuptana.
The units were constructed by METCAN Building Solutions Inc in Hay River to replace existing social housing units which had reached the end of their service lifetime.
The social housing waitlist in Behchokǫ̀ mostly consists of those seeking one-bedroom units, as well as those seeking small family homes. These new units will help with both of these needs.
This project was funded through the GNWT’s $150 million investment in creating more affordable homes in the North.
“I look forward to continuing this work and advancing the GNWT’s priorities to provide more homes for Northerners,” said Kuptana.
