Premier R.J. Simpson spoke today in celebration of this year’s Trans Day of Visibility.
“Today, on Trans Day of Visibility, we recognize and celebrate trans and gender-diverse people across the Northwest Territories,” said the Premier.
Trans Day of Visibility has been celebrated internationally since 2009, celebrating trans people and their contributions to society, as well as helping to bring awareness to the discrimination they continue to face.
“Everyone deserves to feel safe, valued, and supported for who they are, in their communities, in their workplaces, and in their daily lives.”
The Premier spoke on the efforts the territory is making to better support trans people, including easier access to gender-affirming health care, as well as updates to laws such as the Vital Statistics Act to ensure government records are more inclusive of gender identity.
Premier Simpson also mentioned the importance of ensuring schools are a safe and inclusive environment for trans youth, and that students feel respected and supported for who they are.
“This work is ongoing. We will continue to work with partners and community organizations to strengthen supports and reduce barriers.”
“To trans and gender-diverse people across the Northwest Territories: you are valued, and you belong here.”
