Hay River conducting public survey on impacts of climate change

The town of Hay River is conducting a public survey on the impacts of climate change as part of their Climate Adaptation Plan. The plan will focus on how climate change is affecting people in town, what actions and priorities are identified as important and will gauge how concerned people are about it.

A recent report issued by the territorial government identified flooding and wildfires as the top risks in the N.W.T.

Scientists have predicted that climate change events are expected to increase in frequency and severity, with growing impacts on people, infrastructure and community operations.

Flooding and wildfires in the territory have resulted in more than $350 million in losses, according to a report released earlier this year by the territorial government.

In a message posted on social media, town officials said that climate change events not only damaged homes and infrastructure but has have had impacts on health and safety, interrupted essential services and daily routines.

The survey is open until April 10.
