City advises regularly running water to prevent freezing sewers

The City of Yellowknife is reminding residents to use their water fixtures regularly to help prevent freezing in residential sewer lines this winter.

Due to unusually cold temperatures this winter, frost levels have been observed as deep as 10 feet. This places some residential sewer lines closer to the frost line than they’re designed for, risking freezing in the pipes.

Regular water use helps to prevent this by keeping water moving in the pipes. Homes with large families may already use enough water daily to prevent freezing, but smaller homes are advised to run warm water through their fixtures intermittently throughout the day.

Residents who are experiencing issues caused by sewer line freezing can contact the city’s Public Works Division for assistance.
