Following reports of elevated lead in school drinking water, the City of Yellowknife tested drinking water in several city facilities.
The tests were conducted the week of Dec. 22, 2025, and the results show elevated lead levels in four of six locations tested.
The sites tested and results were:
- Fieldhouse — no exceedances
- Multiplex — no exceedances
- YK Arena — two downstairs washrooms, lobby water fountain and canteen sink
- Curling Club — bar sink only
- City Garage — kitchen sink
- City Hall — second-floor kitchen and second-floor water fountain
The city noted that elevated lead was found only in specific fixtures and may be the result of internal plumbing components. There have been no indications of contamination in the overall municipal water supply. City water from the treatment plant is safe to drink and meets all territorial and federal requirements.
The Office of the chief public health officer has been notified, and contaminated fixtures have been taken out of service, with appropriate signage and alternate drinking water sources provided.
Mayor Ben Hendriksen said in a press release, “Access to safe drinking water is essential for everyone who works in or visits our facilities. We want to assure staff and residents that we are taking immediate steps to address the affected locations while continuing to provide safe water throughout our facilities. Our commitment is to the health and safety of everyone in our community.”
The city said residents and staff can continue to rely on water in municipal buildings. For added security, other precautions, such as using prefilled water bottles, can be taken.
The city will continue to provide updates on the situation as work continues. The latest information can be found on the City of Yellowknife website.
