Suspect allegedly escaped with gun kept while under house arrest

A 30-year-old is facing charges following an alleged incident involving a weapon and alleged violation of bail orders that required them to stay inside their residence. Police in Hay River reported that the suspect was taken into custody following what they called a “volatile situation” Sunday night.

“On November 23rd, at approximately 9:27 p.m. officers in Hay River received a report that an intoxicated suspect had left a residence, in violation of his bail conditions to remain inside the residence at all times,” said police in an announcement issued today.

Officers reported that an investigation determined that the suspect was in possession of a shotgun before he left the house and when he returned.

“Shortly after, a report was received indicating the suspect had returned to the residence and was acting erratically while still in possession of the gun, which was loaded,” said police.
According to the report, officers returned to the residence where police engaged in a “brief standoff” with the suspect.

“The suspect ultimately dropped the firearm before charging at officers. A conducted energy weapon was successfully deployed, and the suspect was taken into custody without incident,” said RCMP.
Officers reported that they located a second long-gun at the residence which was also seized.

RCMP reported that no injuries occurred in relation to the alleged incident.
