A 21-year-old man from Alta. is facing charges after an alleged incident of cocaine and carfentanil trafficking in Hay River last week.
Carfentanil has been linked to a number of ovedoses in the Hay River area, after a dangerous mix of the substance was recently detected in cocaine for the first time.
Officers reported that they seized “quantities of suspected cocaine and carfentanil following what they said was a routine traffic stop on Saturday in the community.
“On November 8th at approximately 12:20 p.m. officers on patrol of Hay River conducted a traffic stop with a vehicle. During the course of the traffic stop, officers formed grounds to believe the vehicle and occupants were involved in the illicit drug trade. Subsequent investigation led to the arrest of two passengers,” said officers.
According to the report, approximately 14.2 grams of suspected carfentanil and approximately 3 grams of suspected cocaine were located following a search.
A 21-year-old man from Edmonton is now facing charges including:
- (2 counts) Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
Obstructing a peace officer, contrary to section 129(a) of the Criminal Code
Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code - Police reported that he appeared before a Justice of the Peace and was remanded into custody. Officers said that another person was released without charge.
