Extreme cold warning: North Slave, Lutsel K’e

Environment Canada is warning of temperatures near minus 50 Thursday morning in the North Slave and Lutsel K’e regions.

Clear skies and an arctic ridge are causing the extreme cold and wind chills nearing minus 50. Temperarures will rise in the late morning.

Extreme cold warnings are issued when there is an increased risk of frost bite, hypothermia and other health risks.

People should watch for the following cold-related symptoms: ‘shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.’ They should also cover up their skin as frostbite can develop in minutes on exposed skin.
