Environment Canada says a storm surge is anticipated to hit Tuktoyaktuk and heavy rains to fall in Paulatuk beginning Friday.
A yellow warning was issued for Tuktoyaktuk due to a potential for high water levels posing a threat to the coastal region. The warning for Paulatuk was issued due to the risk of localized flooding.
The water level warning is in effect for coastlines from Mackenzie Bay to McKinley Bay including Tuktoyaktuk.
Water levels could reach nearly one metre over tide, potentially damaging structures.
“The highest water levels are expected to reach 80 to 90 cm above highest astronomical tide on Friday afternoon and may cause moderate flooding. These conditions can cause damage to infrastructure near the coast, including boats beached or anchored along the shoreline,” read a message from the federal environment agency.
Heavy rains are forecasted to begin in Paulatuk on Friday.
Environment scientists predict that by the end of the day about 15 to 30 mm of rain will accumulate.
More rain is anticipated for Friday night and Saturday.
“By the time the rain tapers off later in the weekend, 50 to 100 mm of rain will have fallen,” read a message from Environment Canada.
The federal agency warned that localized flooding is possible.
“Some roads may become impassable. Significant property damage is possible. Fast-moving and rapidly rising water can sweep vehicles away and damage infrastructure.”
Area residents and anyone travelling through the region is warned to avoid low-lying areas and keep away from rivers, creeks and culverts
