Try your hand at Ultimate Sunday

The Yellowknife Ultimate Club is inviting Yellowknifers to try out their sport.

It’s an exciting time to get involved in the sport, also known as Ultimate frisbee, says Connie Lee, league organizer in Yellowknife and an Ultimate player since 2002.

“It’s exciting to see how much the sport has grown in the time that I’ve played. It’s such a new grassroots sport, it’s a great way to get into a competitive sport.”

The sport’s federation was recently recognized by the International Olympic Committee, allowing it to be played at the Olympic Games. Locally, Lee says the sport is a lot like the city itself.

“It’s not a huge community but it reflects Yellowknife as a city as well, it’s very welcoming,” she says. “It’s for everyone from every skill level and athletic background.”

A free clinic is being held Sunday for beginners and veterans alike. All that is needed is a dark and a white shirt and indoor sports shoes. The very minimal amount of gear needed is one of the sport’s appeals, says Lee.

The clinic will cover the basic skills and rules of the game, as well as drills and scrimmages. Anyone from age 16 and up is welcome.

The free clinic will be held January 13 from 8 to 10 p.m. at the Fieldhouse.
