The Government of Canada has announced that they will be investing $1.4 million into support for snow and ice control operations at two Northwest Territories airports.
Parts of the funding will be used to acquire a snow blower for the Norman Wells Airport, as well as a grader for the Fort Simpson Airport.
“This investment will help ensure the Norman Wells and Fort Simpson airports can continue operating through challenging winter conditions, keeping communities connected, supporting local economies and strengthening Canada’s North for years to come,” said Minister of Transport Steven MacKinnon.
These vehicles will aid in the removal and control of snow and ice on runways and taxiways, improving the airports’ reliability and safety and ensuring they can provide safe and efficient air transportation in the North.
“It’s about making sure northern communities can count on the transportation links they need to grow and thrive,” said Minister Rebecca Alty.
These investments, made through the Airports Capital Assistance Program, build on over $10 million in funding previously provided to the two airports through the program for a number of projects, including runway lighting rehabilitation and the purchase of a runway sweeper and plow truck.
Since its launch in 1996, the program has provided over $1.3 billion in funding for more than 200 airports across Canada, roughly $56.1 million of which has gone to projects in the NWT.
