The Government of Canada has announced that they will be investing $15 million into making Highway 8 more safe and reliable for travelers in the NWT.
“Highway 8 is a critical transportation link that supports northern communities, businesses and the movement of essential goods and services,” said Minister Vince McKay.
This funding will be used for the replacement of three culverts along the highway, critical infrastructure which allows water to safely pass under the roadway.
Highway 8, part of the Yukon-NWT Dempster Highway corridor, is a vital transportation route for the North. These improvements will make the route safer and more reliable for local communities, businesses, and travelers.
“By replacing these culverts along Highway 8, we are ensuring safer, more reliable travel and long-term resilience of this critical transportation route,” said Minister Rebecca Alty.
These investments are being made through the Rural and Northern Communities Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.
Including this announcement, 36 projects in the NWT have been funded through the stream, amounting to over $176 million in federal investment in northern infrastructure.
“We appreciate the Government of Canada’s investment and continued partnership in strengthening transportation infrastructure that serves residents across the Northwest Territories,” said McKay.
