The NWT Recreation and Parks Association is working to help communities in the territory keep their spaces safe and comfortable during periods of extreme heat and poor air quality through their Community Cleaner, Cooler Air Space project.
“Periods of wildfire smoke, poor air quality and extreme heat can create serious challenges for northern communities,” said NWTRPA Active Communities Director Tim Van Dam.
Through this initiative, NWTRPA helps to provide air-cooling equipment, air-filtration equipment, and air-quality monitors to eligible communities at no charge, helping them to establish designated indoor areas where residents can seek relief from outdoor conditions.
“This project supports communities in preparing a welcoming indoor space where residents can gather and breathe cleaner, cooler air when conditions outside or in homes are poor,” said Van Dam.
Communities must provide an eligible space to participate, with a maximum interior of 1,500 cubic meters and internet access available and are also responsible for installation and maintenance of the equipment.
Communities which are interested in the project can find more information at NWTRPA’s website.
