Whatì RCMP executed a search warrant on July 11, leading to the seizure of suspected drug and drug paraphernalia.
Police say they obtained the warrant following a report in relation to alleged drug trafficking activities taking place in a residence in the community.
They executed the warrant on the evening of July 11 with assistance from Behchokǫ̀ RCMP, the Northwest Territories RCMP Emergency Response Team, Police Dog Services and Remote Piloted Aircraft Systems.
“This is excellent work and an exemplary police response during a very busy weekend in Whatì, when several members of nearby communities were there for the hand games tournament,” said Inspector James Lai, the officer in charge of the South District.
Six individuals inside the residence were reportedly taken into custody without incident. Police say they also located evidence of illegal drug trafficking, including ledgers, a scale, and an unidentified brown substance that was sent to a lab for testing.
Five of the six individuals were released at the scene without charges, while the sixth was taken to the detachment and later released. Police say charges may be laid following the investigation, which is ongoing.
