Wood Buffalo fire has escaped park boundaries

The fire raging in the Wood Buffalo National Park has grown again, reaching a size of 46,674 hectares, according to the latest report.

Late yesterday afternoon the fire’s eastern flank breached the park’s boundary and crossed the Little Buffalo River.

The fire is currently burning in a northern direction, and bucketing action continues in the area.

Ground crews made progress in fighting the fire, using small-scale hand ignitions to remove unburned fuel along the fire’s northwestern side.

The fire is currently being actioned by 95 personnel, 9 helicopters, and 3 fuel bowsers.

Three more heavy helicopters are expected to arrive today to assist with firefighting operations and help ground crews safely access priority areas.

Smoke from the fire has resulted in yellow air quality alerts for Fort Resolution, including Highway 6.
