YWCA NWT is celebrating their 60th anniversary with an Open House and Mural Unveiling this week in Yellowknife. Behchokǫ̀ artist James Wedzin’s gorgeous artwork will be showcased at the event with the presentation of the mural.
“The mural helps visually tell the story of YWCA NWT’s work supporting women, families and youth, while promoting healing, interconnection and cultural safety within the space,” said organizers in a special announcement today.
Alayna Ward, with the YWCA NWT, said the mural is located at a central location in the entry of Gotı̨ li Kǫ̀ transitional family housing building and office and will help to create a culturally safe and inclusive space
“A lot of the staff are located there and that’s where a lot of the programs take place as well. We have a lot of traffic that comes in and out of that location, as well as a lot of families that live in that location. So the place of the mural would be right at the entryway,” explained Ward earlier this year.
Organizers from YWCA NWT said all are welcome to attend to celebrate with the presentation of the artwork more than six decades of serving Northern women, families and youth
“Community members are welcome to attend the Open House and meet YWCA NWT staff, learn more about the organization’s services and programs, and enjoy conversation and refreshments.”
The Open House and mural unveiling is scheduled to take place on Thursday from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Gotili’ko at 5011–54th Street
