The Government of Canada is investing $6.5 million into accessibility upgrades at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre.
“For over 50 years the PWNHC has preserved and shared the history, cultures and stories of the Northwest Territories,” said Minister Caitlin Cleveland.
The planned upgrades will include improvements to the Centre’s interior ramps, lift assemblies, interior stairs, and the auditorium.
These upgrades will help to ensure the Centre remains an inclusive environment for all and continue its vital role in preserving and sharing the history of the Northwest Territories.
“Public spaces should be open and accessible for everyone to enjoy, especially vital cultural spaces like the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre,” said Minister Rebecca Alty.
The improvements are being announced during National AccessAbility Week. This annual event urges governments, businesses, and individuals to work towards a barrier-free Canada.
“Our government is proud to mark National AccessAbility Week by investing $6.5 million in these important facility upgrades to ensure everyone can celebrate the NWT’s culture and history in person,” said Alty.
The Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre houses the Northwest Territories archives, as well as numerous galleries and exhibits.
