The Northwest Territories Power Corporation says they will be engaging in an ambitious vegetation management program this year, mainly focused on six communities in the territory.
The communities NTPC plans to target with this program are Hay River, Wha Ti, Lutsel K’e. Wrigley. Fort Good Hope, and Inuvik, proceeding in that order.
“Vegetation management or brushing is a key part of NTPC’s efforts to maintain and enhance reliability,” said NTPC in a Facebook post.
“Tree contacts on transmission and distribution lines are responsible for a number of outages each year.”
Efforts are expected to begin in Hay River in late May/early June
NTPC also says that specific trees will be removed in other communities when they are identified as problematic.
At the same time as their brushing program, NTPC says they will also be starting a pole replacement program to repair the 74 electrical poles that were identified during an inspection last year.
NTPC warns that there may be power outages during this process, and the dates and times of these operations will be posted on their Facebook page.
My North Now has reached out to NTPC for more information including the locations of the poles and will share that information when it becomes available.
