New modular housing units arrive in Behchokǫ̀

Five new modular housing units have arrived in Behchokǫ̀ for onsite assembly, the final phase of construction before the homes are ready for occupants.

“Housing is the foundation of healthy families and strong communities. It is promising to see new economic opportunities and local partnerships also result in more homes for Northerners,” said Minister Lucy Kuptana.

The new units include a three-bedroom modular home and a fourplex consisting of singles units. These new residences are intended to replace existing Housing NWT infrastructure in the community that has reached the end of its service lifespan.

These new homes are the product of a partnership between Housing NWT, Tłı̨chǫ Community Builders Ltd. and METCAN Building Solutions Inc. that was first announced in 2025.

The units were manufactured in Hay River before being transported to Behchokǫ for assembly. Through modular construction homes can be built faster and cheaper, while still delivering durable residences built for northern conditions.

“This investment reflects our commitment under the 20th Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories to improve housing across the territory and create better outcomes for Northerners,” said Kuptana.
