Premier R.J. Simpson makes statement on new federal investment in the North

Northwest Territories Premier R.J. Simpson believes the funding announcement made by the federal government earlier this week is an important step forward for the NWT and for Canada’s Arctic as a whole.

“The Government of the Northwest Territories welcomes the federal government’s commitment to investing in critical infrastructure that will strengthen our communities, support economic development, and reinforce Canada’s presence in the North,” he said in a statement yesterday.

The Premier hopes these investments into infrastructure, transport, and energy will help strengthen the North, ensuring Canada is able to fully exercise its sovereignty and provide opportunities for Northern communities.

“[These projects] have the potential to transform our territory,” said Simpson.

“They will help connect communities, create new economic opportunities, and support responsible development of the NWT’s natural resources, including the critical minerals and energy resources the world increasingly depends on.”

Among the investments announced during the Prime Minister’s speech are the Mackenzie Valley Highway, the Arctic Economic and Security Corridor, and the expansion of the Taltson hydroelectric system.

“When completed, these major infrastructure projects will reshape transportation, energy, and economic opportunity in the North and help define Canada’s Arctic for generations.”

Premier Simpson also said that these projects will only succeed through strong partnership and collaboration with Indigenous governments and communities.

“Indigenous governments and organizations have been leaders and advocates for responsible development in the North, and their close collaboration will continue to be essential as these projects move forward.”

The Premier hopes residents from across the territory will come together to help build this new chapter in the North’s future.

“A stronger North means a stronger Canada, and we look forward to working with our federal and Indigenous partners to turn this vision into reality.”
