Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment Caitlin Cleveland and Sahtu MLA Danny McNeely were among the attendees at last week’s Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada convention in Toronto.
Minister Cleveland said that their focus this year was on leveraging the strong National and International interest in the North to create tangible progress in the industry.
“We co-hosted the Invest North of 60 event to showcase opportunities across the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and the Yukon to investors and industry leaders from across Canada and around the world.”
Among the recent announcements was an update to the territories Mining Incentive Program, as well as a new study of mineral potential across the Slave Geological Province.
“Global demand for minerals such as copper, gold and critical minerals continues to grow, and the Northwest Territories remains one of the most prospective regions for new discoveries,” said MLA McNeely.
McNeely also spoke on the role infrastructure investments will play as the territory works to capitalize on the mining sector’s potential.
“Projects such as the Mackenzie Valley Highway, the Arctic Economic and Security Corridor and the Taltson Hydro Expansion can help open new areas for exploration, provide reliable power for future mines, strengthen supply chains and create stronger connections between northern communities and markets.”
The attendees hope that as resource development in the Northwest Territories proceeds it will help create jobs and support local businesses, as well as provide strong, long-term economic opportunities for communities across the territory.
“I left PDAC feeling optimistic about the future of the sector, the momentum we are seeing across the territory, and the role the Sahtu can play in the next chapter of the North’s resource economy.”
