The Government of the Northwest Territories and the Behdzi Ahda’ First Nation have reached key milestones in strengthening education in Colville Lake.
Three modular school units have been delivered to the region, to support students in the near-term, and the site for a future permeant school has been selected.
The modular units will help support the education needs in Colville Lake, as well as provide an improved learning space for students and teachers.
Transporting the modular units to Colville Lake represented a major logistical challenge, as the large size and weight of the units, alongside winter road conditions, made transport difficult.
“Winter road operations are never easy, and transporting units of this size requires precision and collaboration,” said Vince McKay, Minister of Infrastructure.
Rolling road closure and temporary delays were planned along Highway 1 and the Mackenzie Valley Winter Road to allow the units through. Communities along the route were also given advanced notice of the closures.
The site for Colville Lake’s new school building will be a decommissioned airport runway overlooking the community.
“The Behdzi Ahda’ First Nation is looking forward to continuing its collaborative work with the Government of the Northwest Territories to successfully complete this project,” said Richard Kochon, Chief, Behdzi Ahda’ First Nation.
