“Canada has long been known as a nation defined by care, respect, and community. Moments like this test us, but they also remind us of the importance of looking after one another. In times of grief, connection matters. I encourage anyone who is struggling to reach out to trusted friends, family members, or community support. Healing begins with conversation and shared strength.

“Words cannot express the pain and suffering being felt in Tumbler Ridge with the senseless and painful loss of a community’s children. The City of Yellowknife stands with all municipalities, large and small, in supporting the families and loved ones affected by this tragic event.”

Mayor Dana Fergusson issued a statement this evening on behalf of the town Council and the people of Fort Smith:

“I wish to express our deepest condolences to the community of Tumbler Ridge following the devastating and heartbreaking events that unfolded yesterday.

Our thoughts are with the families, friends, classmates, school staff, first responders, and the entire Tumbler Ridge community as they navigate this unimaginable grief.

“As a northern community, we understand how closely connected communities can be during times of tragedy. Incidents such as this resonate far beyond municipal boundaries. They remind us of the importance of supporting one another, prioritizing mental health resources, and ensuring that our schools and public spaces remain places of safety and care.

“We extend our appreciation to the RCMP and emergency responders who acted swiftly in response to this crisis. We also acknowledge the difficult work ahead for investigators and community leaders in supporting healing and understanding.

“In times like these, we are reminded to hold our children closer, to check in on our neighbours, and to strengthen the compassion and support systems within our own community.
