The health authority has announced that they are starting a bus service for people travelling into Inuvik for medical appointments.
The GNWT says the new service will provide scheduled transportation services for medical travel clients between the Inuvik Airport and the Inuvik Regional Hospital Transient Centre, which is used for overnight stays by medical travel clients.
According to the announcement, the service is managed by hospital and health authority staff and is aimed at reducing wait times during peak travel periods and ensure clients have more “predictable” transportation when accessing care. The authority says that by removing the need for client reliance on smaller-capacity vehicles, the new service will enhance safety, improve coordination for groups of travellers and “supports better planning for both clients and staff.”
The initiative is also expected to be more cost-effective.
“Currently, the dedicated bus service operates Monday to Friday. Clients travelling from the Inuvik Airport to the IRH Transient Centre on weekends are asked to continue using local transportation options. Over time, the NTHSSA may explore expanding the service,” said officials.
The authority said that clients travelling to Inuvik for medical care who have questions about the bus transportation can contact 867-777-8000 for more information.
