YK Airport conducting emergency preparedness exercise on Tuesday

The GNWT announced that the Yellowknife Airport will be conducting a live security and emergency preparedness exercise on Tuesday.

According to the announcement issued today, the exercise is part of routine testing that happens every two years.

“In accordance with the Canadian Aviation Security Regulations, aerodrome operators are required to conduct a live security exercise at least once every two years. This exercise is designed to test the effectiveness of the airport’s emergency plan in response to an act of unlawful interference with civil aviation,” said airport officials.

Reps said that airport patrons can expect an “increased presence” of security and emergency personnel at the airport on Tuesday.

Crews will be conducting simulated emergency scenarios, and officials warned that this may include “loud noises and visible response activities.”

Officials also advised that there will be temporary access restrictions in certain areas of the airport.

While it is unclear what areas of the airport may be restricted, officials said that scheduled flights will not be impacted.

Airport crews advised that the public be mindful of any instructions from airport staff and security personnel.
