Over 900 roadside-checks resulted in 2 charges over long weekend

Over Thanksgiving weekend, police officers spent nearly 200 hours performing over 900 roadside checks across the territory for impaired, aggressive and distracted driving. The awareness and enforcement campaign, dubbed “Operation Impact,” resulted in two drivers facing driving impairment charges, a relatively low number compared to stats from 2024 and 2023.

Between Friday to Monday, 917 vehicles were checked, leading to eight alcohol-related licence suspensions, but only two of these resulted in charges.

“On a positive note, only two drivers were found to have been impaired and subsequently charged,” said police.

Stats from Operation Impact 2024 showed five drivers faced impaired driving charges following 680 roadside checks.

According to stats from 2023, nine drivers faced impaired driving charges following 631 roadside checks over that year’s Thanksgiving weekend.

The campaign this year also saw six seatbelt violation tickets issued to drivers in the N.W.T.

Officers organized checks out of nearly 40 locations stops across the territory.

“This year’s efforts saw officers dedicate approximately 173 extra hours to traffic safety and enforcement. 39 check stops were established during the initiative, in addition to a multitude of routine traffic stops,” said police.
