City releases updated emergency management plans, building on 2023 Wildfire After-Action Assessment

The City of Yellowknife has released its updated Community Emergency Plan and Evacuation Plan.

According to the city, the plans will play a critical role in the city’s approach to emergency management, and are built on emergency management best practices, engagement, and draw from the recommendations from the KPMG After-Action Assessment of the 2023 Wildfire Response.

The new Community Emergency Plan will replace the city’s previous Emergency Management Plan, and includes best practices for the city to follow before, during, and after an emergency. The Evacuation Plan however, expands on the city’s previous Evacuation Framework and sets out the structure for managing partial or full evacuations of the city.

Officials maintain that both plans have been prepared with an “all-hazards approach” and a wide scope to allow flexibility in response to any emergency.
