Winter heating subsidy for seniors now open

The Government of the Northwest Territories has announced that applications for financial assistance with heating costs for seniors are now open.

Last year, the GNWT raised subsidy rates and expanded eligibility for the Senior Home Heating Subsidy program to reflect the rising cost of living in the territory.

Eligible seniors with low-to-moderate household incomes can receive up to $750 a month from September 2026 to April 2027, depending on their home community.

The subsidy covers a portion of heating expenses, with participants responsible for any heating costs that exceed the monthly subsidy.

The deadline to apply to the program is March 15, 2027.

Information about how to apply, and the income thresholds and subsidy amounts for different communities can be found here.
