Parsons Inc. has been the Main Construction Manager of the Giant Mine Remediation Project since 2015. Following the gold mine’s closure in 2004, many environmental concerns were left behind, as is common following large scale mining operations, including over 230,000 tonnes of arsenic trioxide stored underground. Current estimations are that the remediation project will be completed in 2038.
As the project takes place on Indigenous lands, one of Parsons’s commitments is to include Indigenous and local contractors in their work, and to provide opportunities to the Indigenous communities that are affected by Giant Mine. The scholarship is one of those opportunities.
The Yellowknife Community Foundation was formed in 1993, to help individuals and organizations find lasting ways to support the community. The Foundation manages endowment funds, investing donations from various parties and distributing the investment income in the form of student awards and community grants. In 2025, the Foundation awarded over $100,000 to more than 60 NWT-based students.
