NWT Environment and Climate Change provide Update on Hay River Fires

In their latest update, the Town of Hay River is still at risk of being severely damaged by the ongoing wildfire.

The Town received the update from official sources at NWT Environment and Climate Change, who are currently in charge of managing the fire. They stated that the fire is still uncontrolled at this time, and that the shifting winds have made it harder for crews to contain the situation. Another shift in the wind is expected to come later tonight to produce similar conditions.

The latest update on the NWT Environment and Climate Change website shows that the wildfire listed as SS003-23 near Hay River has been extinguished. The fire listed as SS005-23 is still active, however, and Hay River is still listed on the Fire Danger Forecast as “Extreme”.

Hay River’s Mayor and Council have expressed their thanks to neighbouring communities for taking in evacuees during this time, and providing them with the resources and services they need.

Hay River residents who are currently staying in Yellowknife will be given a green wristband once they are registered at the Multiplex. The wristband will allow access to various City-run services at no cost. These services include the Ruth Inch Memorial Pool, the Fieldhouse, Downtown Parking, Yellowknife Transit, and the Public Library.
