The governments of Saskatchewan, Alberta, and the Northwest Territories have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on nuclear energy.
With energy demands rising across western Canada and the North, finding reliable, affordable, and sustainable methods of power generation is more important than ever.
The memorandum established a framework for the governments to share information and collaborate on the potential of nuclear power generation technologies, including large-scale nuclear reactors.
The agreement also supports the government’s efforts to explore the possibility of enhanced transmission infrastructure between Saskatchewan, Alberta, and the NWT to allow the three jurisdictions to share power more easily.
Stronger regional connections could also support the integration of other power systems such as solar, wind, hydro, and natural gas to help fill energy needs and stabilize costs.
“Reliable and affordable energy is essential to the future of the Northwest Territories. Stronger connections between our electricity grids could create real opportunities for the North,” said Premier R.J. Simpson.
The agreement centres around the priorities of strengthening electrical systems, evaluating nuclear technology as a potential source of power, and exploring inter-regional power transmission.
The memorandum will allow the governments to collaborate on these priorities, while still respecting each jurisdiction’s individual energy needs and unique circumstances.
“This agreement will help us work with our neighbours, share information and explore potential grid connections, while positioning the NWT to take advantage of new energy opportunities in the region,” said Simpson.
