$55 million contract awarded for housing development on 54th Avenue

Housing NWT has announced that a construction contract for a 64-unit housing development in Yellowknife has been awarded to PCL Construction.

The contract, valued at $55 million, represents a significant step towards providing much needed social and transitional housing in Yellowknife.

“Through this partnership with PCL Construction, we are expanding access to transitional and social housing while investing in homes that will support residents and strengthen our communities for years to come,” said Minister Lucy Kuptana.

The housing development, located on 54th Avenue, will boast 30 transitional housing units consisting of single units with a kitchenette and bathroom, 34 social housing units with a range of options, as well as a new early learning and childcare space.

“Together with our partners, we’re committed to delivering a high-quality housing complex that will provide welcoming places for residents to live,” said Vice President and District Manager at PCL Construction Management Inc, Jason Portas.

This project is funded by both the GNWT and the federal government, with more than $24 million in funding coming from the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s Rapid Housing Sub-Stream of the Affordable Housing Fund.

“By bringing this critical project one step closer to reality, today’s announcement marks a major milestone in our partnership with the Government of the Northwest Territories and Housing NWT to increase the supply of affordable and supportive housing across the North,” said Minister Rebecca Alty.

Construction on the housing development is expected to begin this fall.
